Simple POS

UI Web E-Commerce Mar 2022 - May 2022
Team: 1 PM, 1 developer, 1 designer

As a UI designer I was involved in creating Point of Sale functionality for an existing software. This project required me to be diligent in studying existing solutions, industry standards and design systems, to create not only a transactional tool, but an extension of our clients' brand identity.

Exploring unknown terrain

For this project I took on the challenge of designing something I had no prior experience with: a POS (Point of Sale) user interface for a client, that works on tablets and integrates seamlessly with the company's existing platform. There was no need to reinvent the wheel: I focused on achieving a quick deployment without imposing a big learning curve on restaurant staff.

Furthermore, it was necessary to consider the possible integration of the POS as a feature of the main platform, so it was important that parts of the interface could be customized to adapt to the branding of different clients.

Studying existing technology

The process began by imagining interoperation with other components of the system. Using the existing shopping cart as a base, I defined the important information that already existed in the database, which would help me understand which parts of this information are important to display in the in-person transaction space.

An analysis of existing POS software illuminated needs I hadn't considered and helped me visualize existing navigation patterns. This benchmarking phase ensured that my proposals were not just intuitive but also aligned with industry standards, streamlining the adaptation process for users.

The visual harmony between the POS and the rest of the platform was not just about brand consistency, but about creating a flow that would feel familiar to the Admin User even though it was intended to be used on a tablet instead of a computer like the rest of the software. The ability to customize colors, fonts, logos and product images added a layer of personalization, ensuring that the point of sale was not just a tool but an extension of the client's brand identity.

Detailing a visual language

The launch of our POS marked a turning point for the company. Thanks to its integration with other purchasing functions, it became one of the most attractive features for new customers. The success prompted the development team to embark on new features.

As these new integrations were refined, the usefulness of a well-documented design system became obvious: rapid feature implementations with minimal design team reviews.

During the completion of this project, the research phase was of utmost importance to me. Thanks to the opportunity I had to immerse myself in the use of existing tools, I recognized the importance of understanding the why of certain design patterns before starting to break them.
